چکیده
For active volcanoes, knowledge about probabilities of eruption and impacted areas becomes valuable information for decision-makers to develop short- long-term emergency plans, which probabilistic volcanic hazard assessment (PVHA) is needed. High-resolution or spatially extended PVHA requires extreme-scale high-performance computing systems. Within the framework ChEESE (Center Excellence Exascale in Solid Earth; www.cheese-coe.eu ), an effort was made generate exascale-suitable codes workflows collect process some hours large amount data that a quality requires. To this end, we created optimized HPC-based workflow coined PVHA_HPC-WF volcano. This tool uses Bayesian event tree methodology calculate probabilities, vent-opening location(s), eruptive source parameters (ESPs) based on volcano history, monitoring system data, meteorological conditions. Then, interacts with chosen model, performing simulation each ESP set scenario (VS). Finally, resulting processed by proof-of-concept-subjected analytics (HPDA) scripts, producing maps describe probability over time exceeding critical thresholds at location investigated geographical domain. Although can be adapted other hazards, focus here tephra (i.e., lapilli ash) transport deposition. As application, performed Campi Flegrei (CF), Italy, located one most densely inhabited Europe under busy air traffic routes. CF currently unrest, classified as being attention level Italian Civil Protection. We consider approximate 2,000 × 40 km computational domain 2 grid resolution horizontal vertical levels, centered CF. explore natural variability uncertainty conditions, number VSs allowing us include those low but high impact, simulations dispersal are them using FALL3D model. Results show potential HPC timely execute vast range complex numerical models high-resolution domains analyze great volumes obtain maps.

Hazard assessment during caldera unrest at the Campi Flegrei, Italy: a contribution from gravity–height gradients
Hazard assessment and risk mitigation at restless calderas is only possible with adequate geophysical monitoring. We show here how detailed long-term microgravity and deformation surveys may contribute to hazard assessment at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in Italy by evaluating gravity–height change (∆g/∆h) gradients obtained during ground inflation and deflation between 1981 and 2001. Such g...
متن کاملModeling Day- and Nighttime Population Exposure at High Resolution: Application to Volcanic Risk Assessment in Campi Flegrei
Improving analyses of population exposure to potential natural hazards, especially sudden ones, requires more detailed geodemographic data. Availability of such information for large areas is limited by specific database requirements and their cost. This paper introduces and tests a new approach for refining spatio-temporal population distribution at high resolution by combining diverse geoinfo...
متن کاملProbabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment of Tehran Based on Arias Intensity
A probabilistic seismic hazard assessment in terms of Arias intensity is presented for the city of Tehran. Tehran is the capital and the most populated city of Iran. From economical, political and social points of view, Tehran is the most significant city of Iran. Many destructive earthquakes happened in Iran in the last centuries. Historical references indicate that the old city of Rey and the...
متن کاملThe influence of probabilistic volcanic hazard map properties on hazard communication
Probabilistic volcanic hazard analysis is becoming an increasingly popular component of volcanic risk reduction strategies worldwide. While probabilistic hazard analyses offer many advantages for decision-making, displaying the statistical results of these analyses on a map presents new hazard communication challenges. Probabilistic information is complex, difficult to interpret, and associated...
